The Things They Carried, a novel written by Tim O’Brien, is a set of short stories about the soldiers’ experiences fighting in the Vietnam War. He reflects and tells his experiences about the war. Stories far from pride, triumphs or combats, show O’Brien’s feelings and experiences of friendship, loss and love and how they affected them after the war. People tell stories so they can understand each other in a better way, to share experiences, this is a way to keep the memories that might have faded alive. Storytelling becomes an interpretation of memoir and catharsis. Stories involve both data and emotions and this is part of his amazing narrative strategy. He uses repetition as one of his narrative strategies and he also uses a particular style as the author and another Tim O’Brien as a fictional character. He test readers to believe or not believe different situations in his stories, this strategy brings a tension between what is true and what is n ot true and he also writes stories about the past to understand it better. O’Brien craves for peace through storytelling, he gets the truth of an event or idea by retelling it. When discussing epic heroes, some of the more prominent ones that come to mind are Beowulf (from Beowulf), Hektor (from The Iliad), and Achilleus (also from The Iliad). These are all characters from literature who have displayed a multitude of the characteristics embodied in epic heroes. Each one of these literary figures has exhibited necessary traits needed to be considered an epic hero. Whether those traits are some of the common ones such as strength, honor, loyalty, perseverance, and bravery, or some of their own such as pride, intelligence, and morality. Whatever the case, these three have undergone difficulties and shown ties to the values held by their cultures within how they deal with issues. Using possibly his greatest characteristic of strength, Beowulf defeats Grendel. This is seen in lines 814-817 where it sta tes, â€Å"The monster’s whole body was in pain, a tremendous appeared on his shoulder. Sinews split and the bone-lappings burst. I found this website to help my family maintain hope of my survival. With my diagnosis I maintained a positive because I was sure I would beat the cancer thriving inside of me. Art therapy worked for my children. They were able to express what they were feeling and the fears they had regarding my illness. We now use the website to find events to participate in, and stay involved to support others in the struggle.
